Speech-Language Pathology Pre-requisite Courses
The School of Health Technology and Management is offering five undergraduate pre-requisite courses in speech-language pathology (SLP) for students who are interested in applying for admission to graduate programs in SLP at colleges/universities.

HAS 310 |
Applied Phonetics of English |
Provides a foundation for studying the speech sounds used in the production of American English. Discusses the branches of phonetics, classification of speech sounds, sound to symbol transcription using the International Phonetic Alphabet and second language and social/regional dialectical influences. |

HAS 311 |
Speech and Language Development |
Provides the students with knowledge about a child’s speech and language development from birth through adolescence. Topics include theories of speech and language acquisition, neurological basis of speech language development including the motor and perceptual basis, speech and language development during infancy, preschool, school-age and adolescence, speech and language sampling analysis, and the importance of cultural linguistic diversity and environmental influences on development. |

HAS 312 |
Anatomy and Physiology of the Speech, Language and Hearing Mechanism |
Provides basic understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the speech, language and hearing mechanism. Students will be able to apply their knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the speech and auditory mechanism to different disorders and diseases. Cannot be taken for credit in addition to LIN 380. |

HAS 313 |
Speech Science |
Introduces acoustics, psychoacoustics, acoustical and articulatory properties of speech production, theories and models of speech perception and apply theoretical information with current technology and research in the field. Discusses instrumentation used to measure respiratory, laryngeal, velopharyngeal and pharyngeal components. Prerequisite: HAS 312. |

HAS 314 |
Guided Observation in Speech-Language Pathology |
This online course will introduce students to practical and professional issues in the assessment and intervention of children and adults with various communication and swallowing disorders within the context of guided video observations. In addition, students will obtain twenty-five clock hours of diagnostic and therapy video-guided observations required for entry into a graduate program. |

SBU Students: Register via Solar - https://it.stonybrook.edu/services/solar.
Non-SBU Students: Apply through the School of Health Technology and Management (SHTM) for non-matriculated status. Contact Dr. Renee Fabus at "renee.fabus@stonybrook.edu" prior to applying.
Additional requirements for graduate programs in Speech-Language Pathology
Individual graduate programs will also require courses in the areas of biological science, physical science, statistics, and social/behavioral sciences. Students are responsible for contacting graduate programs to obtain information about all their pre-requisite requirements.
