Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Technician and patient with MRI machine

The School of Health Professions, in collaboration with Stony Brook Medicine's Department of Radiology, is offering a combined didactic/clinical Continuing Professional Education [CPE] program in Magnetic Resonance Imaging [MR].

The goal of this MR-CPE program is to prepare participants for the American Registry of Radiological Technologist’s (ARRT) post-primary certification examination in MR. Didactic classes are designed to provide a strong educational foundation in multiple MR technology topic areas while the clinical component provides the participant with the MR procedural experience required for MR examination eligibility.

The didactic component runs once a year, beginning each September and concluding in May. Classes are held from 9:00 a.m.– 12:30 p.m. on Saturday in the Health Sciences Center. The clinical component is conducted following successful completion of the didactic course at either Stony Brook Hospital or one of its program affiliates. Clinical experience obtained outside of SBU Medicine is the responsibility of the individual students.

MR students must be ARRT or NMTCB certified and registered in good standing, and possess a NYSDOH license in a supporting discipline as defined by the ARRT. Exceptions may be granted to a allow medical imaging or radiation therapy clinical students based on the program director’s discretion.

Participants must maintain a 75% average in the didactic area to receive a certificate of completion for the CPE program. All topic areas must be completed within the one-year cycle to receive a certificate of completion.

This MRI program is approved for 71 Category A CE credits by the ASRT.
