After graduating from Stony Brook University’s Physician Assistant (PA) program in 1992, Professor Donna Crapanzano began her career practicing emergency medicine throughout hospitals in Queens and Long Island.  During this time, she recognized the need to further understand public health issues in the context of providing better health care. Consequently, she attended Columbia University and completed her master’s degree in Public Health in 1996.  In 2001, Professor Crapanzano continued her studies and received national certification as a diabetic educator.  After completing her master’s degree, Professor Crapanzano worked in family medicine, which expanded her access to various populations and the opportunity to offer more comprehensive women’s health care and diabetic counseling. Shortly thereafter, Professor Crapanzano became a faculty member in the Physician Assistant Department in the School of Health Professions (SHP).

In addition to teaching, Professor Crapanzano was a preceptor for SHP’s PA students at her family medicine practice.  Through her involvement with a major pharmaceutical firm, Professor Crapanzano developed strong analytical skills and an understanding of the importance of research and evidence-based medicine, which was of great value to the school. Professor Crapanzano has been a committee member and past Vice Chair of the SHP Research committee since 2005.

Since 2010, she has been a clinical assistant professor in the Health Science Department and has been instrumental with implementing new curriculum as well as the required prerequisite courses for the Health Science major.  In 2021, Professor Crapanzano was promoted to Clinical Associate Professor and assumed the role as vice-chair of the department.  She remains dedicated to community service and continues to do work with Literacy Suffolk, participate in health literacy programs and support students in fundraisers, food drives, and other community activities.
