  1. How much volunteer time would I need to be admitted into the program?
  2. Can I take my pre-requisite sciences at other colleges?
  3. What are the job opportunities in occupational therapy?

Question #1: How much volunteer time would I need to be admitted into the program?
Answer: You need to have 100 hours of volunteer experience observing an occupational therapist in 2 different settings. Work experience with an occupational therapist can be used but can't exceed more than 25% of the 100 hours. Volunteer experience may be fulfilled in a variety of settings such as out-patient rehabilitation, nursing homes, school-based, psychosocial settings, and acute care settings.
Question #2: Can I take my prerequisite sciences at other colleges?
Answer: Yes, science courses can be taken at Suffolk Community College, Nassau Community College, Farmingdale University, or any local community college in the vicinity where you live. Science courses must be specified for “science majors.” If you are unsure about the specific course, please contact the OT program prior to registration. You will then be required to obtain a transcript from the school where you took the courses and provide the OT program with documentation of completion during the admissions process.
Question #3: What are the job opportunities in occupational therapy?
Answer: Occupational therapists have a wide range of career opportunities working with individuals across the life span, from infants to older adults. Services are provided in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, long term care facilities, out-patient departments, schools, senior centers, individual homes, as well as within many community-based centers and programs (i.e. senior centers, health education programs, adult day centers, youth programs, mental health centers, and others).
