1. How many credits is the MS program in Speech-Language Pathology?
a. The MS program for Speech-Language Pathology is 63 credits- Track I
b. The MS program for Speech-Language Pathology with Teacher Certification is 73 credits - Track II
c. The bilingual extension includes all requirements for ii) above plus an additional 12 credits for a total of 85 credits - Track III

2. How long does it take to complete the program?
The full-time MS program for options a.) takes 2 years including 1 summer session, b.) takes 2 years and 2 summers, and c.) takes 3 years.

3. What are the requirements for applying to the program?

Admissions Requirements for the SLP Graduate Program

Students are considered for overall admission to the Masters in SLP program at SBU if they meet the following overall admission requirements:

  • Students must have completed a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher at the time of application to the program.
  • Students have to complete at least one course with a grade of B or higher in the following courses: Biology, Social Sciences, Statistics and either Chemistry or Physics. These areas are indicated in the Knowledge and Skills Assessment (KASA form Area IV-A) (https://www.asha.org/Certification/2020-SLP-Certification-Standards/).

    Coursework in statistics as well as in biological, physical, and social/behavioral sciences that is specifically related to communication sciences and disorders (CSD) may not be applied for certification purposes to this category unless the course fulfills a general university requirement in the statistics, biology, physical science, or chemistry areas.

    Acceptable courses in biological sciences should emphasize a content area related to human or animal sciences (e.g., biology, human anatomy and physiology, neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, human genetics, veterinary science). Chemistry and physics are important for the foundational understanding of the profession of speech-language pathology. For all applicants who apply beginning January 1, 2020, courses that meet the physical science requirement must be in physics or chemistry. Program directors must evaluate the course descriptions or syllabi of any courses completed prior to students entering their programs to determine if the content provides foundational knowledge in physics or chemistry. Acceptable courses in social/behavioral sciences should include psychology, sociology, anthropology, or public health. A stand-alone course in statistics is required. Coursework in research methodology in the absence of basic statistics cannot be used to fulfill this requirement. https://www.asha.org/Certification/2020-SLP-Certification-Standards/
  • A student’s degree may be in another field, but they must have completed the following pre-requisite courses prior to enrollment: Phonetics, Anatomy and Physiology of the Speech and Hearing Mechanism, Typical Speech and Language Development, and Speech Science. These areas are indicated in the Knowledge and Skills Assessment (KASA form Area IV-B) (https://www.asha.org/Certification/2020-SLP-Certification-Standards/). 
  • All applicants to the master’s degree program in SLP must take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) (Qualitative, Quantitative and Writing) and scores must be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS).
  • Students must submit three recommendation letters including two from academic faculty and one character reference.
  • Students must submit an official transcript(s) from all higher education institutions the student attended.
  • Students must complete an admission essay included within the application.
  • Students must submit an application fee.
  • Students must complete a successful interview (if invited) with the SLP interview committee. 

Students interested in completing the TSSLD only or TSSLD with Bilingual Education Extension Tracks require completion of additional pedagogical coursework at their undergraduate institution in Liberal Arts and Sciences. The students’ transcripts will be reviewed by their academic advisor and an advisor in the School of Professional Development during their first semester in the program. If not, they will have to enroll in the equivalent coursework prior to graduating from the master’s program in speech-language pathology.

  • Students must have a Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 undergraduate GPA. Students must have completed 30 semester hours in general core coursework in Liberal Arts and Sciences. Examples of College coursework in the areas of: Artistic Expression, Communication, Information Retrieval, Humanities, Language other than English (including ASL), Written Analysis and Expression, Concepts in Historical and Social Sciences, Scientific Process, and Mathematical Students 

The chair in consultation with the program admissions committee will evaluate on a case by case basis when needed. Recommendations will be made to the SHTM admissions committee for final approval. For the TSSLD and TSSLD with bilingual education extension, the chair in consultation with the University Certification Officer in the School of Professional Development will review the applicants transcripts.

Admissions Requirements for Advanced Graduate Certificate (AGC) in Bilingual Education Extension

Students must have completed a master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education and meet the minimum GPA requirement of 3.0. Their degree may be in any field. Each applicant must submit a personal statement that describes the applicant's special qualifications over and above those already cited on the degree application, including experience and how this program helps advance his or her professional and personal goals. In addition, a required online orientation must be completed by all applicants.

This program will only be open to either practicing professionally licensed in-service teachers seeking additional certifications or students currently enrolled in a teaching certification program

Certificate candidates must also:

  • Provide official transcripts showing completion of and graduation from a master’s degree program or enrollment in such a program.
  • Either hold an initial, professional or permanent teaching certificate in any field or be enrolled in a teaching certification program.
  • Attain at least a 3.0 (B) cumulative grade point average (GPA) for all graduate courses taken at any institution(s) prior to matriculation into this program.
  • Complete and official ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and receive a spoken proficiency ranking of Advanced Low or above.

4. Is it possible to complete the MA program on a part-time basis?
No. This is a full-time program.

5. Are pre-requisite courses offered online?
Yes, all the pre-requisite courses are offered online and must be completed prior to starting the graduate program.

6. How should I go about registering for prerequisite courses?
Contact the program chair and complete a non-matriculated application for admission in order to enroll in the pre-requisite courses
