Dr. Gail Cohan graduated from the Stony Brook University (SBU) Medical School in 1987. She completed her residency in Primary Care Internal Medicine at the Residency Program in Social Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, NY. Dr. Cohan is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine.

Dr. Cohan joined the SBU Department of Medicine/Division of General Medicine and Geriatrics in 1992 and combined a busy primary care practice with clinical teaching until 2015.  As a member of the faculty of SBU Medical School, she developed the Primary Care Track of the Internal Medicine Residency Program in 1995 and directed that track for four years. She joined the PA Program as medical director in 1999.

Currently, Dr. Cohan is a half-time member of our faculty. She lectures in several different units and directs the course in Principles of Clinical Pharmacology for pre-clinical students. In addition, she conducts Medical Director Presentation Rounds. These ongoing sessions help students to develop strong oral presentation skills, which are essential in medical practice. Among other honors, Dr. Cohan is recipient of the Faculty Honor Award from the School of Health Technology and Management and recipient of the Humanism in Medicine Award from the SBU Medical School.

In her leisure time, Dr. Cohan thrives on vacationing with her wife, cooking, gardening and writing and reading poetry.
