Dr. Gloria Viboud received a 6-year degree in Clinical Biochemistry from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina (Bioquimica, UBA). She worked as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist at the British Hospital in Buenos Aires, and at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases. In 1995 Dr. Viboud received a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from Göteborg University, in Göteborg, Sweden. Her research dealt with the mechanisms of adhesion of Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) to the human intestinal epithelium. In 1999, Dr. Viboud joined the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at Stony Brook University as a post-doctoral fellow and in 2004, became a Research Assistant Professor in the same department.

Dr. Viboud joined the Clinical Laboratory Sciences Department in 2008, and presently teaches courses in General Microbiology, Clinical and Medical Microbiology, Parasitology and Mycology. In 2012, she became certified as a Specialist in Microbiology by the American Society of Clinical Pathology, SM(ASCP).  In 2013, she spearheaded the submission of a SUNY High Needs Program grant application. The Clinical Laboratory Sciences Department was awarded that grant to develop a long distance learning bachelor of Science in Clinical Laboratory Sciences, which is currently in place. Presently, she is working on the development of an Advanced Graduate Certificate and a Masters in Medical Molecular Biology with a diagnostic and a research track.

Dr. Viboud holds a joint academic appointment in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology where she has an active research lab that studies the molecular aspects of the interaction between Yersinia pseudotuberculosis and the host cell, in particular, how the bacteria modulate host cell signaling to subvert the innate immune response. She has written numerous scientific research articles in peer-reviewed journals and two book chapters. Some of her most recent publications can be found here. She has also presented her research work at a number of national and international conferences, has been an invited lecturer at several conferences and has mentored numerous undergraduates and graduates students. Dr. Viboud is a member of the American Society for Microbiology since 1991.

Additional teaching experience at Stony Brook also includes: lecturer in a Microbiology course for Medical students, teacher and developer of a Microbiology course for the Master of Art in Teaching Biology at the Center for Science and Mathematics Education (CESAME), formerly the Long Island Group Advancing Science Education (LIGASE).

Dr Viboud is the chair of the research committee at the School of Health Professions and is a member of the SUNY Committee of Diversity and Cultural Competence. She has collaborated with the Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) for six years to increase the number of underrepresented minority students in science. She has taught AGEP students the basics of biological science research, and has supervised their individual research projects.
