Gloria Viboud

Gloria Viboud, Ph.D.

Gloria received a Master of Science in Clinical Laboratory Sciences from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. In 1999, Dr. Viboud joined the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at Stony Brook University as a post-doctoral fellow, and in 2004 she became a Research Assistant Professor. Dr. Viboud has been a faculty in Clinical Laboratory Sciences Department since 2008, where she teaches courses in General Microbiology, Medical and Clinical Microbiology, Parasitology and Mycology.

Dr. Viboud’s early research was conducted in Sweden and Argentina, and dealt with the study of enterotoxigenic a major cause of diarrhea for children in developing countries and for travelers visiting those countries.

Currently, Dr. Viboud directs a research lab that focuses on the interaction between Yersinia pseudotuberculosis and the host cell, in particular, how the bacteria modulate host cell signaling to subvert the innate immune response. The findings of these works have been presented in numerous international meetings and led to the publication of 23 peer-reviewed papers in highly respected journals and 2 book chapters.

Dr. Viboud is a reviewer for the Journal of Infectious Diseases, Infection and Immunity, and Cellular Microbiology. She is a PhD thesis Committee member for the Graduate Program in Molecular and Cellular Biology, SBU. She collaborates with the Center for Inclusive Education (CIE) mentoring undergraduate students for the Summer Research institute (SRI) and participating as a moderator of discussion panels, and with the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) as a summer research mentor, host of the research course WSE187, and guest speaker.

Dr Viboud is the Chair of the Research Committee in the SHTM and member of the SUNY Diversity Committee. She is looking forward to working with Jennifer deBeer Charno as her mentor over the coming year.
