Occupational Therapy in Morocco

Fifteen occupational therapy students, led by Dr. Dale Coffin, engaged in a unique service learning trip to MoroccoDuring the 10-day trip, the OT students had the opportunity to participate in hands-on learning and treatment at a special needs school, an orphanage for babies, a women's hospital specializing in cancer and the Autism Foundation of Morocco. The students worked with people of all age groups at a number of clinics across seven cities in Morocco, including Casablanca, Marrakech, Essaouira, Rabat, Kenitra, Fes, and Azrou. They visited MAIR Neurorehabilitation Clinic, the only nursing home in Morocco, which also serves as an orphanage, as well as the King Mohamed Rehab School.

People travelled from across Morocco seeking medical advice and evaluation from the team. The future occupational therapists worked with speech-language pathologist, Christina Raschella of New York, occupational therapist, Nelline Cox of New York, and local occupational therapists to provide education to the community. They met with people with a number of disabilities, including children with cerebral palsy, individuals with traumatic brain injuries and Down syndrome, and cancer clients. During their stay, the group stepped outside of their clinical roles to help provide much-needed aid to the communities they visited. They raised $500 to benefit a privately funded women's cancer clinic and distributed feeding supplies, clothing, school supplies, toys, toiletries, sneakers, and shoes to all the facilities visited.
