    Dr. Sabatini Dwyer earned a B.S. in Economics from Queens College (CUNY), and an MS/Ph.D. from the School of Industrial and Labor Relations in Labor and Health Economics from Cornell University. Dr. Dwyer went on to complete a one year post-doctoral position in the Maxwell School of Public Policy at Syracuse University. Her areas of expertise are policy studies of the health and labor market. Her work informs Social Security and Health Policy. In addition she has made significant contributions in the measurement and use of survey data in empirical research.  She was appointed Chair in 2009.

    Prior to coming to Stony Brook University Dr. Dwyer was Senior Economist in the Division of Economic Research, Office of Research Evaluation and Statistics, at the Social Security Administration in Washington, D.C. She worked as part of the disability project team that focused on the disability components of the Social Security System. Through that work she developed a model for simulating eligibility for disability insurance and supplemental security income in the general population.

    In addition to her teaching responsibilities in health care policy and health economics, Debra advises and mentors undergraduate and graduate students (MA, PhD) in a number of areas within health care policy research. She serves on many academic and community service committees as well as a referee for several peer-reviewed journals and books in the areas of health and labor economics. Her research projects and interests include information in the health market, obesity, adolescent risky behavior, work and health, and Medicare reform.

    Debra is part of a leadership team building an interdisciplinary doctoral degree program in the School of Health Technology and Management. She was also instrumental in the development of a dual degree program between the economics department and the public health program. She has run an applied health and labor research workshop in the economics department since 1998. Debra has authored or co-authored over a dozen research articles with many of them published in peer-reviewed journals. She has been awarded outside funding from the NIA, National Center for Educational Studies, Center for Retirement Research, and the Michigan Retirement Research Consortium. She is frequently invited as a guest presenter at national and international conferences.
    Debra is heavily involved in a Reformed Church in Stony Brook where she has run support groups and book studies and has served as a Deacon, Sunday school teacher, and the head of outreach. In her free time, she enjoys activities that involve spending time with her husband and two young daughters.
